Tips For Keeping Your Home's Plumbing Safe This Winter

by Wanda Franklin

There are many homeowners that make the mistake of failing to properly prepare their homes for the cold winter months. This error can result in numerous issues for the homeowner that can severely damage their house's plumbing. To avoid this problem, there are a couple of tips that you can use to keep your pipes safe from the biting winter temperatures.

Clean The Sump Pump

Your home's sump pump may be critical for preventing water from accumulating in your basement and causing damage. However, these systems can be prone to freezing during the winter time because they typically retain a small amount of water in them. When these systems freeze, the water will expand, which may rupture the sides of the sump pump.

Avoiding this damage will involve cleaning and vacuuming your sump pump before the winter temperatures arrive. You will need a wet vacuum to suck out the excess water and debris that has built up in the tank. While this type of work is not particularly pleasant, it can prevent a ruptured sump pump from causing major water damage to your home when the ice thaws.

Use Insulation And Pipe Heaters On Exposed Pipes

Depending on the configuration of your home, it is likely that there are many pipes that are at least partially exposed to the elements. Whether these pipes are located next to an uninsulated wall or they are directly exposed to the air, it is important to insulate these pipes against the harsh temperatures.

You can do this by wrapping insulation around the pipes. This insulation will help keep the water just above freezing, but it may not be sufficient in all conditions. If the temperature drops extremely low, this insulation will likely be inadequate to protect your pipes. To further enhance the protection of your pipes, you can also install pipe warmers that are essentially small heating elements that are placed on the pipes. These will generate enough heat to keep your pipes from freezing regardless of the temperature.

Protecting your home's plumbing from wintertime damage is a critical responsibility for any homeowner. However, it is an unfortunate fact that there are many people that neglect to take proactive steps for their plumbing. This can contribute to a host of damages, but if you drain and clean your sump pump as well as insulate your exposed pipes, you can avoid some of the more routine causes of expensive plumbing damage.

Maintaining Normalcy and Keeping Records: Tips for HVAC Maintenance

Hi, my name is Melinda, and when I sold my home three years ago, I realized that I should have been keeping maintenance records. Because I couldn't prove that we had maintained our HVAC system, the home was actually harder to sell than it should have been. I don't want anyone else to lose money on a home sale or to experience the stress of not having the right records. Because of that, I have created this blog. It explains everything you need to know about maintaining normalcy with your HVAC system and keeping records of check-ups and repairs. Please, take a seat and enjoy reading this blog.
